Summary: The long-term sustainability of our natural resources is in the hands of many local communities, state agencies, non-profit conservation organizations, and thousands of private landowners. Private forest landowners own over 12.5 million acres, or 75 percent, of the Commonwealth's forestland. The demands on our forests are ever increasing; subsequently, the knowledge a forest landowner should have to properly manage their forests is also increasing. Future forest conditions directly depend on the decisions being made today.
The goal of this conference is to help you explore and understand some of the management options that are available to you and to provide an opportunity to network and meet other forest landowners.

Additional conference details are available here.

From Springs to Sprinklers

from South Mountain Speakers Series by The South Mountain Partnership

Oct. 2, 2012

DCNR: Next South Mountain Lecture to Focus on Water Quality and Quantity in the Region

HarrisburgThe final lecture of the year in the South Mountain Speaker Series will focus on the challenges of conserving water quality and quantity in the region on Thursday, Nov. 8, in Memorial Auditorium at Shippensburg University.

“From trout fishing in our spring-fed creeks to the ice cold glass we enjoy on a hot summer's day, water is at the heart of our quality of life here in the South Mountain region,” said Allen Dieterich-Ward, an associate professor of history at Shippensburg University and the chair of the South Mountain Partnership committee on the speaker series. “Over the years, new demands on ground and surface water have created challenges for conserving these important resources.”

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a reception featuring displays by local watershed and advocacy groups.

At 7 p.m., Pat Bowling, a hydrologist with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, will describe water challenges and then join a panel of local experts to discuss ways to protect our water supply for future generations.

The panel will include Dr. Christopher Woltemade, a professor in Shippensburg’s Department of Geography/Earth Science, and Michael Christopher, manager of Washington Township, Franklin County.

This event is sponsored by the Adams, Cumberland and Franklin county conservation districts; Shippensburg University; DCNR; and the South Mountain Partnership.

This is the third year for the South Mountain Speakers Series, envisioned as a revival of the talks given by Joseph Rothrock in the late 19th century as part of his work to preserve and restore Pennsylvania’s forests and natural landscape. The series is anticipated to return in 2013.

Sparked by DCNR’s Conservation Landscape Initiative, the South Mountain Partnership is an effort to engage communities, local partners, state agencies and funding opportunities to conserve high-quality natural and cultural resources while enhancing the region’s economic viability.
For more information about the speaker series, visit http://southmountainspeakers.blogspot.com/ or call the Appalachian Trail Conservancy at 717-258-5771.
Some of the earlier lectures in the speaker series can now be found on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/SouthMtnSpeakers.

Summary: A chainsaw is one of the handiest tools to use in the proper management of your forest. Forest landowners can accomplish a wide range of tasks for wildlife, timber, invasive species, and recreation management by learning proper chainsaw techniques. Use of the saw brings with it the high risk of injury, resulting from unforeseen accident, careless misuse, or lack of understanding of chainsaw function in different circumstances. This demonstration presents tree felling techniques, basic bar and chain maintenance, the art of chain sharpening, basic chainsaw operating procedures, and safety equipment to use when operating chainsaws. This demonstration is designed for the forest landowner with minimal to moderate prior chainsaw experience. Hope to see you there at what promises to be an interesting and educational program.

Summary: Penn State Extension, DCNR Bureau of Forestry, and the Allegheny Mountain Woodland Association are providing this workshop to assist forest landowners and natural resource management professionals in making good decisions about the management of their woodland. The information provided will help you learn about invasive forest plants, both native and non-native, and how they impact forest growth and development. You will also learn how different herbicides are applied and work to control tough invasive plants.

Forestry herbicides are an effective method for managing forest vegetation and are appropriate for achieving many objectives including: regeneration establishment, increased timber production, enhanced wildlife habitat, non-native plant control, and road and facility maintenance.

Across the state there are a number of issues that are increasing the need for vegetation management and the use of forestry herbicides. These issues include: vegetation that interferes with forest regeneration, poorly planned and executed timber harvesting practices, declining pulpwood markets, and increasing invasive plant species abundance. The proper use of herbicides has become an important tool for forest landowners and managers to use when it comes to managing undesirable vegetation.
