Presentation summary:

This webinar is a presentation on what it takes to have a successful timber sale. For private forest landowners, harvesting timber could be a once-in-a-lifetime decision that can have long-term effects on the forest and on the landowner financially. It is very difficult and sometimes impossible to fix mistakes. Therefore a thorough understanding of the process and the responsibilities of the landowner, forester and logger are critical. We’ll discuss these responsibilities so that every effort can be made to ensure a successful timbersale.

There are significant impacts of deer and invasive plant species on forests and woodlands, and these deer and plant impacts can interact. Join Dr. Bernd Blossey of the Cornell University Department of Natural Resources for this webinar. Bernd will introduce new metrics on how to assess deer damage and then discuss implementation of suburban deer management programs in the Ithaca area. These new approaches have resulted in substantial deer reductions in several towns and may function as a blueprint for other communities struggling to find their own process to deal with overabundant deer herds.

Conifer trees are a common feature of woodlots, forests and landscapes. The value and qualities of trees are determined in part by the type of tree. Knowing the principles of tree identification will help owners appreciate the value of trees and the types of benefits those trees might provide. This presentation will cover the core principles of tree identification, including how to use twigs, buds, bark, fruit (cones), growth habit, habitat (and even leaves) for identification. Knowledge of these principles will help participants learn how to identify a wide range of trees. Several common trees will be used to illustrate the principles.

It is a safe bet that every parcel of privately owned forest land in Pennsylvania has multiple invasive species. With these invasive species posing more problems than can possibly all be solved at once, how can landowners decide when and how to act? We will discuss some ways to prioritize and make management decisions towards reducing the impact of invasive species.

Why do you own woodlands? This is an interesting question, and one you have likely asked yourself. Individually, everyone likely has myriad reasons for holding woodlands. Hopefully your woodlands bring levels of satisfaction and enjoyment to life; however, you likely have questions, issues, challenges, and uncertainties associated with your land. In this webinar, we will look at the some of the top issues identified through surveys and discussions with Pennsylvania woodland owners. It is one thing to identify the issues; it is another thing to find resources to attain resolution. We cannot promise to cover your issue or provide the solution you need, though through this process, we might open new conversations, find new resources, and help you conserve and better manage your woodlands.
