The Spotted Lanternfly: Its Biology, the Quarantine Order and Management Options

Lycorma delicatula (spotted lanternfly), a new invasive insect which was first found feeding on Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven) in Berks County PA in 2014. This insect has potential to damage several important commodities including grapes, stone fruit and timber crops. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has enacted a quarantine order to try to reduce the spread of this insect. Included in this presentation will be the biology of spotted lanternfly, a summary of current management and eradication efforts, and a discussion of practices required by the quarantine order.

The application of sustainable forest management can greatly improve forest bird habitat, while achieving timber management objectives and improving the ability of the forest to provide ecosystem services. Audubon New York created Forest Management for New York Birds: A Forester’s Guide as a resource for foresters and other land managers to integrate important bird habitat components into forest management planning. This webinar will give an overview of Audubon’s new resource, which provides guidance on how to manage forested landscapes to provide a balance of forest age classes to meet the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds, as well as stand-level features that increase structural complexity and enhance habitat.

Developing access to your woodland increases opportunities for its use. This includes roads and trails for recreational activities such as walking, hunting, and wildlife watching as well as forest management activities such as controlling invasive plants and harvesting. Proper access can increase your enjoyment of the land. However, roads and trails must be properly planned, constructed, and maintained to ensure they last and won’t cause erosion and water quality concerns. This presentation will review forestry best management practices, the minimum standards, and provide an overview of proper road, skid trail, and stream crossing construction practices.

Firewood, Invasive Species, & Forest Health

This webinar will discuss results from a
national survey of citizen attitudes toward invasive species, firewood
movement, and forest health. This webinar is jointly sponsored by the
SREF Forest Health and Invasive Species Program and the Firewood
Outreach Coordinating Initiative.
Invasive species are a
major forest health threat in North America, costing federal, state, and
local governments billions of dollars annually for monitoring,
management, and mitigation of impacts. Landowners are often negatively
affected when forest ecosystems are changed and they lose valuable trees
to invasive pests. Human-mediated movement of invasive species is a
common method in which pests travel long distances. Using data from a
national survey of U.S. citizens, this webinar will discuss people's
attitudes and knowledge towards invasive species and the relationship
with firewood. We will consider these data, and the common perceptions
of individuals who routinely frequent the outdoors, in the broader
context of forest health.

The course is geared to prepare firefighters, EMS personnel, foresters, and loggers in taking action to reduce severity of injury and increase the loggers chance of survival after a logging accident. Advance Logger Rescue is a program that teaches all participants how to handle an "in woods" rescue from the time a person has not arrived home until they are at a Level-1 Trauma Center.
Instructor Dana Hinkley is a retired captain (specializing in heavy rescue) from the Berlin, NH Fire Department. He has also spent the last 35 years working in the logging business with his father. Dana has developed the Logger Rescue courses and has trained hundreds of loggers, foresters and EMS personnel throughout the United State and Canada.
Attendance is FREE, but pre-registration is mandatory. Lunch will be provided. Class is delivered regardless of weather.
No walk-ins will be permitted! No late or faxed enrollments will be accepted! Registrations are on a first-come, first served basis and spaces are limited!

Oaks are the dominate species in much of the central hardwood region of the eastern US. They are also important components of northern hardwood and Appalachian hardwood forests. Throughout the eastern US oaks are not only pivotal as a timber species and hard mast for wildlife, but they also provide important aesthetic attributes and most importantly stability to ecological communities. As with many hardwoods, oaks are experiencing regeneration complications and failures. This webinar will explore the ecological and economic importance of oak, establish the basis for the challenges of oak regeneration, factors that have contributed to regeneration decline, and steps that can be taken. Collaborative efforts to ensure the continued prominence of oak in Ohio will be discussed as a case study with opportunity in other locations.

Presentation summary:
When it comes to forest management, equipment, methods and techniques that work well on 50 or 100 acres might not be appropriate for parcels of 5, 10 or 20 acres. Throughout much of the Northeast, as well as other parts of the country, a large portion of the forest resource is held in small parcels as a result of parcelization and fragmentation. As well, many of the management activities a larger landowner might undertake involve only a few acres or small portions of their property. Forest and habitat management need not be constrained by or limited to the methods and equipment commonly used by the commercial timber harvesting industry. Good silvicultural practice is just as relevant to a 7-acre parcel as to a 70-acre one. Scale-appropriate methods and equipment used in the right combinations and suitable to the purpose can be engaged for a variety of management and value-added purposes.
During the summer, fall and winter of 2015 roadside forest management silvicultural treatments were implemented at three separate sites in CT. Various small-scale forest harvesting equipment combinations were tried and tested under a variety of forest and terrain types. Tree-felling and processing times, skidding times and distances and product volume and value were tracked. This multi-media presentation will share observations and experiences and will reflect on the applicability of the methods used to address small parcels, habitat enhancements, roadside forest management and other small-scale harvesting needs. What works well on 5 acres works just as well on 5 acres of a 50-acre parcel.
