Presentation summary:
Fire has played a significant role in shaping many North American ecosystems and prescribed burning is being more widely used to meet various land management objectives. Creating early successional habitat for wildlife, increasing landscape diversity, and improving oak management are among the reasons for increased use of fire in eastern forests. Fire exclusion has been linked to species composition changes in once fire-prone upland oak ecosystems that are implicated in causing cooler, wetter, closed-canopy conditions with increased abundance of fire-sensitive trees limiting oak regeneration. I'll discuss these topics and present some of our research findings that highlight how variability in moisture dynamics and flammability across species' litter and other species' traits may help explain the dynamics of fire-dependent ecosystems and the challenges for restoration in fire-excluded sites in the eastern US.

Presentation summary:
Forests are under threat by a multitude of different stressors, including climate change, invasive species, high deer populations, pollution, fragmentation and direct loss. Disentangling and then appropriately managing threats to local biodiversity requires landowners and forest managers to recognize whether local actions can deliver appropriate outcomes, even in the face of global or regional threats. Despite these threats, there is hope because we have accumulating evidence that many declining or even rare species, can thrive in even comparatively young (50-150 year old) forests despite fundamentally altered biotic communities and a biotic conditions. This presentation will focus on species of conservation interests and outline the different local actions and showcase how short- (5-15 years), mid- (20-50 years) and long-term goals can be pursued in protecting and enhancing your woodlands.

Progressive Forestry in Pennsylvania Hardwoods: Using Expanding Gaps and Low-Intensity/High-Frequency Thinnings to Create Vibrant, Resilient Forests

PA Forests Web Seminar Center

Date: March 12, 2019

Presentation summary:
Forestry today is faced with a host of new impacts: climate change, invasive species, introduced pests and a landscape over run by deer. Yet, in many ways we manage forests with the same philosophy and process that was used 50 years ago. Join us for a review of progressive practices including: expanding gap openings, high frequency thinnings, understory development and logging with horses.
