The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid is one of the most important ecological problems facing forests in eastern North America. Having ravaged forests in the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding areas it has been moving much more slowly as it spreads northward. This pause gives hope for the possibility of developing management that will be effective at keeping Eastern Hemlock forests of the Northeast intact. My message is one of hope and at the same time demands attention now so we are not too late in saving the legacy of this iconic and cherished forest tree species.

This interactive webinar will explore some of the common perceptions (both true and false) held by Pennsylvania's private forest landowners. Statements commonly made by landowners about their woods, wildlife, forest pests, and timber management will be used to facilitate sharing and learning. Using a "peer to peer" and "mediated" learning approach, the presenters will ask participants what they think about several statements presented to them. Participants will be encouraged to write in their responses and share personal thoughts and experiences during the webinar. The presenters, Sanford Smith, Natural Resources and Youth Extension Specialist, Penn State Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, and David Jackson, Forest Resources Educator, Penn State Extension, will then respond and share their own comments and knowledge. Questions and further discussion will be encouraged after each statement is covered.

Mortality from many invasive insects including emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid are impacting the long-term development and management of forests across the northeast. This webinar will discuss several considerations for managing forests in tandem with forest health issues, such as how to include pre- or post-salvage operations with timber stand improvement or regeneration methods, and options for replanting.

Across a region encompassing New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, 3.0 of 18.9 million acres of oak forests are poorly stocked from high-grading, disease and insect outbreaks, severe weather, and poor regeneration. Because stocking is highly variable within these stands, a single prescription for the entire stand can be counter-productive by over- or under-treating some areas. The promising preliminary results of adapting a micro-stand (1/10 ac) approach developed in Quebec to our oak forests will be detailed along with the impacts of deer browsing and invasive shrubs on achieving competitive forest regeneration.
