Timber 2013 - June 7 & 8

Timber Show will be at Penn State’s Ag Progress Days site at Rock Springs, Pa., nine miles southwest of State College on Pa. Route 45. Centrally located and easily accessible to forest product companies in Pennsylvania and surrounding states, this biennial event is the largest forest product equipment show in the state, with up to 100 exhibitors expected. The show features in-the-woods equipment demonstrations, a skidder drive area, grinder & chippers demos, and educational workshops. Entertainment includes Penn State Woodsmen’s Team and chainsaw carving.

Attendees can explore the equipment and services of an estimated 100-plus exhibitors that are focused on serving the needs of the forest products industry. See up-close machinery demonstrations, experience new and emerging technology, visit with business assistance specialists, and attend seminars to learn about new ideas and business opportunities—all without an admission or parking charge.

Each day of the show, a PA SFI CE Update Course will be held providing one (1) year (4 hours) of PA SFI continuing education credit. The course is free, but a $20 administrative fee is required to register the credits.

The Pennsylvania SFI CE Update course will cover a variety of environmental and safety topics current to Pennsylvania Timber Harvesters and will include both classroom presentation and in-the-field study. Program Manager Chuck Coup will give an update on the PA SFI program and review new website services that make finding and registering for continuing education easier. Mike Barton Jr, of Michael Barton Forestry Consulting will discuss regulations related to the Indiana bat and recent issues surrounding the potential listing of 3 other bat species in Pennsylvania. Jim Coslo, Resource Conservation Supervisor with the Centre County Conservation District, will demonstrate the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Index (PNDI) Environmental Review Tool and its role in permitting for stream crossings. The course will also include a discussion on storm damage and salvage safety. Dave Jackson, Forest Resource Educator with Penn State Extension, will lead a field tour of the nearby Penn State woodlot to discuss silviculture and Best Management Practices for harvesting and forest roads.
