Forests with different age classes of trees, called “uneven-aged” forests provide a number of different ecosystem values than single-aged forests.  This webinar will cover the proper techniques for creating and maintaining age diversity as well as covering both the benefits and potential limitations that age diversity provides to forest ecosystems.

The Spotted Lanternfly: Its Biology, the Quarantine Order and Management Options

Presentation summary: 
Lycorma delicatula (spotted lanternfly), a new invasive insect which was first found feeding on Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven) in Berks County PA in 2014. This insect has potential to damage several important commodities including grapes, stone fruit and timber crops. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has enacted a quarantine order to try to reduce the spread of this insect.  Included in this presentation will be the biology of spotted lanternfly, a summary of current management and eradication efforts, and a discussion of practices required by the quarantine order.

The application of sustainable forest management can greatly improve forest bird habitat, while achieving timber management objectives and improving the ability of the forest to provide ecosystem services. Audubon New York created Forest Management for New York Birds: A Forester’s Guide as a resource for foresters and other land managers to integrate important bird habitat components into forest management planning. This webinar will give an overview of Audubon’s new resource, which provides guidance on how to manage forested landscapes to provide a balance of forest age classes to meet the habitat needs of a suite of forest birds, as well as stand-level features that increase structural complexity and enhance habitat.

Presentation summary: 
Developing access to your woodland increases opportunities for its use. This includes roads and trails for recreational activities such as walking, hunting, and wildlife watching as well as forest management activities such as controlling invasive plants and harvesting. Proper access can increase your enjoyment of the land. However, roads and trails must be properly planned, constructed, and maintained to ensure they last and won’t cause erosion and water quality concerns. This presentation will review forestry best management practices, the minimum standards, and provide an overview of proper road, skid trail, and stream crossing construction practices.
