year) of PA SFI® Continuing Education (C.E.) credit. Individuals seeking C.E.
credit must submit a completed Non-PA SFI Course C.E. credit form (this form may not be available at the workshop so you will need to print it out beforehand), a course agenda or
certificate of completion, and a $20 administrative fee (Check made payable to
“PA SIC”) to the PA SFI office. Continuing Education credit can only
extend your PA SFI Training Card expiration date by a maximum of 3-years from
the current calendar year. Please refer to the PA SFI Training Policy

Assessing and Promoting Successful Regeneration in Your Woodland

Date: June 13, 2017
Times: noon - 1:00 PM and 7:00 - 8:00 PM, eastern time. Questions often last an extra 15 to 20 minutes
Registration: Presentation URL (for both times): https://meeting.psu.edu/PAForestWeb/
Handouts, PowerPoints and Recorded Presentations will be available at

Presentation summary:
Lack of adequate tree regeneration is one of the top concerns in many woodlands in Pennsylvania and throughout the Northeast. This difficulty in obtaining successful growth of the next generation of trees is caused by three factors: 1) competition from other plants in the understory, 2) intensive browsing by white-tailed deer, and 3) the overstory canopy casting too much shade for seedlings in the understory. Without active management to promote successful regeneration in privately owned woods, the long-term function of our woods is impacted. This webinar will provide an overview of an assessment process woodland owners can use to evaluate regeneration. In addition to the assessment, webinar participants will learn the silvics, including light requirements and growth rates, of some common trees. Lastly, the webinar will provide an overview of stewardship activities commonly used to promote regeneration.

Presentation summary:
This webinar presentation will look at how an understanding of competing plants, deer, and light can lead to successful forest regeneration and the sustainability of hardwood forests. The regeneration, or re-growth, of forests requires that sufficient numbers of desirable trees seedlings become established following a timber harvest. Often times, regeneration is not easy. Regeneration failures and re-growth of less desirable tree species is commo
n. Competing plants, over-browsing by deer, and insufficient light to the forest floor interfere with tree seedling establishment and growth. Forest sustainability is threatened without adequate forest regeneration. This presentation provides information on key practices used to successfully establish hardwood forest regeneration.

Presentation summary:
Every four years, the U.S. Global Change Research Program conducts a National Climate Assessment for major resource sectors in the United States. The current Assessment is now in progress. A team of scientists working on the Forest sector has developed an early draft report describing major issues and potential management responses. Your feedback on this early draft is needed to inform completion of the report. Please join us to get a preview of the Forest sector report, ask questions, and provide comments.
