NY - Timber Harvesting Workshop

WHERE: Cedarvale Maple Syrup Co., 3796 Pleasant Valley Rd, Onondaga
REGISTER: The event is free, but registration is requested. Contact Roy Widrig at (315) 424-9485, ext. 232, or rlw294@cornell.edu to register.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County will host a timber harvesting and water quality workshop. The workshop will feature a woods walk through a recently harvested property. The landowner, a consulting forester and Extension staff will discuss the harvest, including using a consulting forester and implementing water quality conservation practices during a timber harvest.
Responsible land management practices are an important part of maintaining the pristine water quality in the Skaneateles Lake and surrounding watersheds. There are many state and federal regulations in place to conserve water quality at the site of a timber harvest, including stream crossing permits and protection of the Clean Water Act.
Landings, temporary roads and stream crossings must be constructed at all harvesting sites but must also be constructed to protect riparian zones, wetlands and vernal pools. In the Skaneateles Lake watershed, there are additional requirements to protect the water quality and maintain the city of Syracuse’s water supply filtration waiver.
Participants are encouraged to arrive by 8:30 a.m., and the workshop will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Some of the terrain may be difficult, so participants should plan accordingly, wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for inclement weather.
More information is available in the Protection of Waters Program from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and by visiting extendonondaga.org/watershed.
This workshop has been approved for 2 hours (0.5 years) of PA SFI® Continuing Education (C.E.) credit. You must complete 2 additional hours of C.E. credit to add 1 year to your training card expiration date. Individuals seeking C.E. credit must submit a completed Non-SFI Course C.E. credit form (this form may not be available at the training so you will need to print it out beforehand), a course agenda or certificate of completion, and a $20 administrative fee (Check made payable to “PA SIC”) to the PA SFI office. When woodlot owners report their activities, one of the most common is the collection of firewood for personal use. Many owners also sell some firewood. Woodlot owners should consider their scale of production, what equipment they have or can borrow, what trees to select, how to fell trees to optimize production and safety, logistics and options for bucking and moving, and how to handle and store the wood. Some legal considerations apply to owners who sell and deliver firewood.
