Pollinators in Pennsylvania's Forests

Penn State Extension; Pennsylvania Forest Online Seminar Series

Date: June 11, 2024
Times: noon - 12:00 PM and 7:00 - 8:00 PM, eastern time. Questions often last an extra 15 to 20 minutes
Registration: REGISTER HERE FOR LIVE WEBINAR

Presentation Summary:
Insect declines have been well-documented globally and conservation actions are being taken to mitigate and reverse those declines. Pennsylvania’s vast forests provide a refuge for countless insects, which have been relatively undocumented until recent years. In this webinar, you will learn about the insects of Pennsylvania’s forests and what can be done to better understand and conserve them. Discover the reasoning for a decline of pollinating insects in Pennsylvania and learn how you can contribute to their conservation efforts.

What will participants learn:

  • The importance of pollinators in Pennsylvania forests
  • Which insects act as pollinators across Pennsylvania, including bees, flies, and wasps
  • How forests and forest-adjacent openings can be managed to improve insect communities

Cornell University - Forest Connect

Date: April 17, 2024
Time: noon - 1:00 PM, eastern time
           and 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Registration: You need a free personal registration ID to join this month’s webinar:

Presentation summary:
This webinar will describe activities at the CT Southern New England Oak affiliate site of the North American Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change Network. The Network is a continent-wide series of experiments exploring silvicultural systems to promote resistance, resilience and transition responses in a wide variety of forest types given anticipated climatic changes. We will present how silvicultural treatments were developed, prescribed and implemented at an experimental site on Mohegan State Forest and discuss early results.

Vegetation response to slash walls that exclude deer from hardwood forest regeneration harvests

Cornell University - Forest Connect

Date: February 21, 2024
Time: noon - 1:00 PM, eastern time
           and 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Registration: You need a free personal registration ID to join this month’s webinar:

Presentation summary:
Slash walls were developed at the Cornell University Arnot Teaching and Research Forest in 2017. Slash walls have proven effective to exclude deer. Annual measurements of permanent sample points have documented changes in vegetation inside versus outside of slash walls. This presentation will review 4 to 6 years of vegetative response, inside younger and older slash walls, to assess their association with the regeneration stocking, hardwood seedling diversity, seedling height growth, and other metrics of response. The design and construction of slash walls will be reviewed.
