National Firewood Workshop - MD

Workshop Summary: 
The workshop is a one-day educational and networking event to provide the firewood processing industry the latest knowledge on processing, kiln drying and marketing of firewood. The intent is to help firewood producers, firewood buyers, firewood equipment makers, foresters and arborists, landowners, loggers, extension agents, and woodstove manufacturers, make money in the firewood business. The program is sponsored by the Wood Education and Resource Center, University of Maryland Extension, Sawmill & Woodlot Management magazine, and North Carolina State University.

The program will include outdoor demonstration of firewood processing equipment as well as classroom discussions by leading firewood industry professionals. The range of classroom topics will include: selling and marketing; finding buyers; purchasing requirements by wholesale brokers and chain store buyers; managing a firewood processing business; sourcing affordable logs; equipment for sawing and splitting; heating options for kilns; firewood quarantines; dry kiln equipment and methods; and firewood associations. This workshop counts for 8 hours (2 years) of PA SFI® Continuing Education (C.E.) credit. Individuals seeking C.E. credit must submit a completed Non-PA SFI Course C.E. credit form (this form may not be available at the workshop so you will need to print it out beforehand), a course agenda or certificate of completion, and a $20 administrative fee (Check made payable to “PA SIC”) to the PA SFI office. Continuing Education credit can only extend your PA SFI Training Card expiration date by a maximum of 3-years from the current calendar year. Danger Tree Workshops - The Process of Felling Danger Trees Safely

REGISTRATION FEE: $40 (cash) paid day of workshop for any Non-WJ Cox Members. "No Shows" will be charged $40.

Four hour demonstration in the forest. All classes start at 12:00 noon. Hardhats are required. Dress appropriate for weather conditions (rain or shine).

DIRECTIONS:

Endeavor - Take Route 666 East from Endeavor, approximately ¼ miles from ITL’s sawmill turn left onto Queen Rd. Follow road and meet at the Compressor Station.

Port Allegany - From Port Allegany, go East on Rt. 6 to Benson Hollow Rd. It will be a left hand turn (from Port). Drive slowly through corn fields and houses and stay on that roadway that begins with blacktop, transitions to dirt and stone until you find our yellow gate (meeting point).

Clermont - Meet at the intersection of the Shawmut Grade Road and Wilcox Clermont Rd (Rte 146)

Each workshop counts for 4 hours (1 year) of PA SFI® Continuing Education (C.E.) credit. You can only attend one workshop for credit.
